Abstract: Arctic navigation, energy operation, fishing will be promoted with the lighter ice conditions under the climate change. Although changing of the physical environment in Arctic is uncertain, scientists and engineers are searching for methods to operate Arctic environmentally, friendly and sustainably. For the Arctic energy operation, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has many contributions in the field of shipping and offshore structures under ice conditions, and the long term stability of the coastal structures is relatively less. As global climate changing and warming amplified in Arctic, Arctic sea ice decays, and offshore and navigation actions becomes easier than before, but the active layer of permafrost along the Arctic coastal increases and makes the soil lose its strength. Therefore, NTNU hold Sustainable Arctic Marine and Coastal Technology (SAMCoT) and Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM) to develop technology and guidelines for the environment-friendly and sustainable coastal structures, and provided erosion protections from scientific research and education. The present literature study reviews the changing tendency in coastal environment with climate changing, including geomorphology, engineering geology, weather conditions, ocean conditions, ice and iceberg; introduces the accumulated experiences and knowledge of coastal engineering in cold regions from NTNU and Dalian University of Technology (DUT) and discusses the development directions of Arctic coastal engineering.
