Role of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi on Vegetation Growth of Primary Succession Area of River Bank

Abstract: This experiment was conducted to find out the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on the growth and nutrient absorption of pioneer plants growing in river bank soil. Three herbaceous plants, Pharagmites japonica, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Polygonum cuspidatum were selected for our experiment due to their vigorous growth and highly dense population in river bank. Spores were collected from the commercial product namely ‘Serakinkon’. A series of pot experiments were done in a green house. The initial colonizer P. cuspidatum showed very low level of AM colonization (0.2% -0.5%) whereas the average colonization level of P. japonica and M. sacchariflorus were 25-34% and 22-28% respectively. AM colonization increased the plant dry weight, P content and N content of P. japonica and M. sacchariflorus plant and it was maximum when applied with normal soil in combination with AM fungi. AM fungi also increased the dry weight, P content and N content when it applied with sterilize soil in compare with only sterilize and normal soil. P. cuspidatum showed no or a negative response to AM colonization in all cases.
