Abstract: Artificial habitat has been built to mitigate flow changes in regulated rivers in Norway. A major purpose is to enhance the ecological effect of minimum flow regimes, especially in rivers with Atlantic salmon and brown trout. Based on fish preference curves derived from fish observations, computer simulation tools are used in the design process to optimize the artificial habitat. The winter performance of artificial habitats is often overlooked both regarding the cold water behaviour of the fish and effects of ice formation in the artificial habitat areas even if the importance of these issues are well documented in literature. This paper gives an overview of an ongoing project with the aim to provide more knowledge on how winter conditions affect the artificial habitats and to include methods of assessing winter habitat in the design tools.
