Abstract: Simulations of flows with complicated vortex-suppressing devices that are important in designs of real hydropower facilities are conducted. It is attempted to reproduce the flow with vortexsuppressing devices by Large Eddy Simulation. The results are examined to evaluate effects of various vortex-suppressing devices. Vortex-suppressing devices include the inclined end wall of the intake channel and the horizontal beams placed near the free surface at the end of the intake channel. These devices are used to suppress the swirling motion in the horizontal directions near the free surface. The present results indicate that effects of vortex-suppressing devices are significant and that the horizontal vane appears to be the most effective and practical.
