Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Modeling of Flood Inundation in Mekong Delta with TELEMAC-2D

Abstract: This paper presents a study on the development of a 2-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic model based on TELEMAC-2D to simulate flood inundation from Kratie to Kampong Cham in Cambodia, along the Mekong River. The flood extent derived from the simulation of a flood event in 2001 was compared with satellite data. The results from TELEMAC were in good agreement with that obtained from MODIS derived satellite images. The best agreement between the two methods was obtained on the day when peak flood occurred, while at pre-flood and post-flood the flood inundation areas were much larger than that observed from satellite image analysis. This discrepancy may be due to the fact that (i) the model only takes into account the hydrodynamic processes of flows in the river and flood plain, it does not consider other hydrological processes such as infiltration or evaporation, and (ii) the resolution of MODIS satellite image is too coarse, thus it is not sufficient to identify flooded areas when the area is small or water depth is low. Finally, it was found that the computing time can be reduced significantly with parallelization using multi-core processors, albeit with little advantage in speedup when the number of cores increased beyond 4.
