Restraining Effects of Deposition in an Artificial Embayment by Piling Along Its Entrance

Abstract: The effects of entrance piling along an embayment mouse were investigated in order to restrain sand deposition in an embayment zone. The velocity distribution, mass exchange rate and sand deposition rate were measured in an open channel with a rectangular embayment with various patterns of pile arrangement. The entrance piling methods were changed in length, density and location in a systematic way. The entrance piling reduces the recirculating flow velocity with an increase of pile density. The mass exchange coefficient is almost proportional to the averaged velocity in the embayment zone. It is noticed that the flow structure affects the exchange rate besides average velocity strength in the embayment. The amount of sand deposition decreased in proportion to the mass exchange coefficient, but some differences were recognized. As a result, relatively low density piling can reasonably restrain the sand deposition keeping certain water exchange function.
