Abstract: Dam-break waves are still in focus of research interests. During last decades lots of investigations were published concerning 2D and 3D dam-break waves with several varying boundary conditions. These can be variations of initial reservoir water depth, surface roughness at propagation area, surface slope, dry and wet bottoms, obstacles at propagation area, and many more. Usually, investigations were carried out in small-scaled laboratory tests where a breach is modeled via vertically installed gates. Especially in the last years numerical simulations became popular due to increased computer capacities and calculation speeds. The present paper picks up this development and compares 2D dam-break waves within a physical model with those calculated via Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. Therefore, similar test cases will be simulated and results will be compared concerning dam-break wave velocities and water depths at propagation area. Result analysis will include a comparison between VOF and SPH for simulations without and with different obstacles placed at various positions at the propagation area. Results show a good comparability between both approaches and also compared with laboratory tests.
