Morphological Evolution of Steep-Sloped River Beds in the Presence of a Hydraulic Jump: Numerical and Experimental Analysis

Abstract: The present work presents numerical and experimental analysis of morphological evolution of steep-sloped channels in presence of a hydraulic jump. Experiments were carried out in the UCL sediment flume with uniform non-cohesive sediment. Two measuring methods – a probe and a digital imaging system – are used to follow bed deformation and water profile evolution. Development of the sediment bore and progressive vanishing of the hydraulic jump has been studied. The numerical results are performed using the explicit MacCormack scheme applied to an equilibrium model using Saint-Venant-Exner equations and to a dynamical model considering an additional equation describing the space/time lag of solid transport. The results of these two numerical approaches are compared with measurements. The first comparison shows that the equilibrium model seems to be suitable for our study case and compare more accurately with the experiments.
