 Course Introduction

Transient flow analysis has traditionally relied on physics-based models and specialist engineering software. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) provide new opportunities to learn from measured data, complement numerical simulations, detect leaks and other anomalies, quantify predictive uncertainty, and support increasingly automated engineering workflows. However, the value of these tools depends on how effectively data, hydraulic physics, and engineering judgement are brought together.

This course aims to bridge the gap between these emerging AI capabilities and their reliable application to transient flow problems. By bringing together researchers, practising engineers, and software specialists, it will provide a balanced understanding of where AI can add value, what evidence is needed to trust its results, and where hydraulic knowledge and specialist judgement remain essential.

 Learning Goals

Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the role of AI in transient-flow analysis

  • Recognise the applications of different AI and machine-learning methods

  • Appreciate the importance of uncertainty, explainability, and hydraulic knowledge

  • Critically select suitable AI methods and software tools for engineering applications

 For whom

The course is intended for hydraulic engineers, researchers, postgraduate students, consultants, and software users interested in transient flows in water, hydropower, and industrial pipeline systems. No advanced background in artificial intelligence is required.
