The Journal of Hydraulic Research (JHR) publishes research papers in theoretical, experimental and computational hydraulics and fluid mechanics, relating to rivers, lakes, estuaries, coasts, constructed waterways, and some internal flows such as pipe flows. To reflect current trends in water research, articles that explore outcomes of interdisciplinary hydro-environment studies with a strong fluid mechanical component are especially welcome. Although preference is given to fundamental issues, papers focusing on important unconventional or emerging applications of broad interest are also appreciated.

Overview
The fourth issue of the Journal of Hydraulic Research includes eleven contributions; a Vision Paper, seven Research Papers, and three Technical Notes. These original studies advance the current state-of-knowledge on a wide range of subjects in hydraulic engineering that are of interest to the readership of the journal, researchers and practitioners alike. More specifically, the author of the Vision Paper articulates the digital transition in water engineering as a long-term evolutionary process rather than as a disruptive technological rupture.
The themes considered by the authors of the Research Papers are:
aeration and turbulence characteristics of hydraulic jumps over vegetated rough beds;
development of a retrofitting system to mitigate geyser eruptions within a sewer network;
the critical role of lateral profile transitions in low-level outlet tunnels of large dams;
development of 1D non-hydrostatic model for rill flow on step-pool morphology with negligible sediment transport;
an experimental framework for the investigation of landslide-induced waves in reservoirs;
3D numerical investigation of dual lateral intakes located within a 90° channel bend;
and use of distributed optical fibre sensors to complement photogrammetric measurements for monitoring small-scale dike breaching experiments.
Finally, the Technical Notes in this issue examine the following subjects: modelling of air–water interactions in breaking hydraulic jumps; a theoretical framework for the prediction of momentum and energy fluxes in dry-bed dam break waves; and a validated reference for determining the conveyance capacity of stepped dropshafts commonly used in deep urban tunnel drainage systems.
