The Symposium on Ice is an event that has been taking place every two years since 1970. It brings together the ice engineering communities from countries around the world that have to contend with cold waters. The challenges that are discussed span a wide spectrum of applications – from risks presented by icebergs to ships and offshore installations and the extent of sea ice in Arctic regions for navigation purposes, to flooding due to ice jams and challenges posed by underwater ice to water intakes along densely populated shorelines, issues of an environmental nature and climate impacts. These proceedings contain the papers of the 26th IAHR International Symposium on Ice, which was held during June 19-23, 2022 in Montréal, Canada at the École de Technologie Supérieure.

Committees

The Symposium was organized by the Committee on River Ice Processes and the Environment (CRIPE) in collaboration with the Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering (OCRE) Research Centre at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). This was done in coordination with the Secreteriat of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) as well as its Technical Committee on Ice Research and Engineering (CIRE).

Revision process

The revision process was jointly coordinated by CRIPE and OCRE, with the involvement of CIRE. The initial step was a ‘Call for Abstracts’ describing the topics of interest to the Symposium – about 130 entries were received by the Scientific Committee (SC), which was composed of 11 ice experts in Canada. About 120 submitters were invited to produce a full paper; in order to do so, they were provided with guidelines. The manuscripts were returned to the SC. Each manuscript was then sent out to three experts from various universities, governmental institutions and the private sector in North America, Europe and Asia. The SC confirmed each review, and/or commented further, before returning it to the author(s) to produce a final (amended) version. This process led to the presentation and inclusion of 76 papers in the proceedings.

Publications Ethics and Malpractice Statement

The monitoring of publishing ethics is a major aspect of editorial and peer-review publications. IAHR is a well-established and long-standing organization whose primary mission is to foster knowledge exchange amongst its community and stakeholder base. Accordingly, IAHR takes its policies on ethics seriously.

The Proceedings of the 26th IAHR International Symposium on Ice has been published under the IAHR Publications Ethics and Malpractice Statement.
