Welcome 2nd Day | Time reversal of waves in hydraulics: experiment, theory and application

12:00 - 13:00 CET

Time reversal (TR) of waves is an intriguing wave property that underpins a breadth of applications and has been an active area of research in engineering and physics over the past three decades. But not so in hydraulics. In fact, TR of waves and its potential in the field of hydraulics is in its infancy. This talk provides the experimental and theoretical evidence of TR of waves in a variety of fields, introduces the basic physics of TR, and exposes numerous potential TR based applications in hydraulics. It is the impression of the speaker that TR is dismissed because it is thought in the context of particles and not waves and also because it is believed that damping invalidates TR. Why waves are TR but particle motion is not TR (e.g., a spilled glass of milk has never been observed to spontaneously reverse course)? Why damping does not invalidate TR of waves? Such questions will be addressed in this talk.
